Ensuring Your Own Success in Your Online University Classes

Taking classes online in the privacy of your own home has many benefits for the self-motivated students who plan their schedules and use their time wisely. There are some tips that when followed can help all students to achieve more in their online classes. Understanding the expectations of the instructor, the layout of the classroom, and the attendance and grading policies can make a difference between passing the class with a high grade and just barely passing the class or even failing it. Be sure you understand the policies and expectations of the instructor. Sometimes these policies will be found in the syllabus and sometimes they are posted separately. They may be in an announcement or class message. Find them and read them. In many colleges, instructors are allowed to make their own policies concerning late work, grading, participation, and other important concerns. Just because you had a class from one instructor last month and you understood his or her policies does not mean the current instructor will have the same policies. In some cases you may not see any instructor policies. If that happens and you have read all of the announcements and class messages, then do not be afraid to ask the instructor any specific questions you may have concerning what is expected in the class. Specifically, you want to know the attendance requirements, the posting or participation requirements, and how your work will be scored. In some cases, students are required to post a message on a certain number of days to be counted present for the week. In some cases, students must respond to prompts in the classroom with posts that are counted for a participation grade. The number of posts that have to be made can vary by instructor or course. Written assignments may have scoring rubrics that provide additional information concerning requirements for the assignment to be acceptable. Check out the classroom and locate the materials, where the assignments are listed, and how to submit the assignments. Some online classrooms are easy to navigate and others take a while to learn the structure. You will most likely have links to reading materials such as a text. You may have links to other resources. You may find questions to which you are supposed to respond. There will probably be weekly assignments that may even have specific due dates. Be sure you know what those dates are.
